CallisonEducation Parent Involvement

Value Added Through Parent Tutoring
William L Callison

One of the new developments in parent involvement is a
focus on family-school partnerships. Activities for parents
to be involved in include: strengthening family-school
partnerships through good communication and mutual
responsibility for children’s learning; providing before
and after-school learning activities for children; making
effective use of facilities such as schools, community
buildings and churches for children and families; giving
parents the resources, training, and information they need
to help children learn; and removing barriers that prevent
parents from becoming involved with their child’s school.

Family involvement in education contributes in a powerful
way to students' achievement in school. When families are
involved in children's learning, at school and at home,
everyone benefits--schools work better, families become
closer, and students improve academically. For these reasons,
families and schools across America are partnering up to take
mutual responsibility for children's learning.

The Effects of Parental Involvement on Minority Children’s
Academic Achievement     Education and Urban Society 2003
William H. Jeynes
California State University, Long Beach
A meta-analysis was undertaken, including 21 studies, to
determine the impact of parental involvement on the
academic achievement of minority children. The results
indicate that the impact of parental involvement overall is
positive and significant for all the minority groups under
study.

Parent involvement is a key strategy in improving academic
achievement in schools. When it is combined with the value added
concept discussed below it can be even more powerful with one big
change. Keep the implementation out of the teacher’s classroom
during regular class time and avoid a huge fight with the teachers
union as seen in the next article. Instead have key teachers train able
parents to use the free software program Parent Tutor in the school
computer lab after school and at home as we are doing in the Davis
Magnet Elementary School in Newport Mesa School District in Costa
Mesa, California. It is available in both English and Spanish.
